Fibroscan, also known as liver scan or elastography, is a non-invasive, painless test similar to an ultrasound. It enables the gastroenterologist to assess for any scarring or stiffness in your liver. Liver scarring (or fibrosis) can result from various conditions, including viral Hepatitis B or C, fatty liver disease, alcohol-related liver injury, primary biliary cirrhosis, or autoimmune liver disease. This procedure measures not only the degree of scarring but also the amount of fatty infiltration (or steatosis).
During the procedure, you will lie on your back with both arms raised behind your head. A medical provider will apply a water-based gel to your skin and then place a non-invasive probe over your liver. While the probe delivers ultrasound waves to the area for measurement, you may feel a slight vibration on your skin.
Physician may recommend a FibroScan test if you have one of the following:
- Diabetes Mellitus
- Cirrhosis
- Obesity
- Alcoholic Liver Disease
- Non-Alcoholic Steatohepatitis (NASH)
- Autoimmune Hepatitis
- Genetic Diseases (such as Hemochromatosis and Wilson’s Disease)
- Hepatitis B
- Hepatitis C
