Echocardiography (Echo) is central to assessment the heart’s function, structures and uses high frequency sound waves (ultrasound) to make pictures of your heart.

The echocardiography can detects.

• To detect abnormality with the heart’s chambers or valves.
• To detect congenital heart disease
• To detect cardiomyopathy
• To detect infective endocarditis
• To detect pericardial disease
• Can see the aortic aneurysm
• Can see blood clots
• Can see cardiac tumor

Who should get echocardiography?

• X-ray found cardiomegaly
• Leg swelling
• Feeling weak

There are two main types of standard echocardiograms:

• Transesophageal echocardiogram is a procedure that inserts prob from throat to esophagus. The probe records the sound wave echoes as they bounce back from the heart and the computer will convert the echoes into moving images of the heart that can be viewed in real time.
• Transthoracic echocardiogram is the most common form of echocardiogram high-frequency sound waves are aimed at the heart through the chest, and the probe records the sound wave echoes as they bounce back. A computer then converts these echoes into moving imagery.
