What is the RSV Vaccine?
What is the RSV Vaccine?
The RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus) vaccine is designed to protect against infection caused by the RSV virus. Currently, a maternal RSV vaccine is available for administration during pregnancy, with the goal of transferring protective antibodies from the mother to the fetus. RSV is a significant viral pathogen responsible for respiratory tract infections and is a leading cause of pneumonia and bronchiolitis in infants.
Who Should Receive the RSV Vaccine?
The RSV vaccine is recommended for pregnant women between 24 and 36 weeks of gestation. Immunization during this period allows maternal antibodies to be passed on to the baby, providing protection against severe RSV-related illness during the infant’s first six months of life.
