Healthcare in Gender Diverse Individuals

Healthcare in Gender Diverse Individuals
Amidst the wave of societal change, there is increasing acceptance of the identity, individuality, and equality of gender-diverse individuals. The image of gender-diverse people often appears vibrant and lively, yet there are delicate and sensitive aspects hidden within.

Similarly, healthcare for gender-diverse individuals requires consideration beyond outward appearance and gender-affirming treatments. Overall health, sexual well-being, and mental health must also be taken into account, all of which are equally sensitive. Routine health check-ups based on general age-related risks may need to be supplemented with hormone levels or blood mineral levels checks, especially for those using hormones for gender affirmation. Cancer screenings specific to one's gender identity are crucial. For example, transgender women who have undergone breast augmentation and use hormones need breast cancer screenings like cisgender women. Transgender men who have not had a hysterectomy still need regular cervical cancer screenings. Additionally, prostate cancer screenings for transgender women over the age of 50 have reference values different from those of cisgender men.

Such specialized health services can be accessed at healthcare facilities with sexual medicine specialists, who provide comprehensive health checks with an understanding of the nature of gender-diverse individuals. This includes screening for sexually transmitted infections, providing HIV prevention medication (PrEP/PEP), mental health counseling, promoting various health aspects, and family planning and assisted reproductive technology, which will become even more relevant as we move forward with equal marriage laws.

It is evident that holistic healthcare is crucial in promoting well-being and fostering a stable and sustainable society.
